Chapter Eleven
Lance
It seemed to take forever for the reception to end.
Of course, that was probably pretty traditional. Two newlyweds would probably be pretty eager to be alone with each other. After all, wasn’t it also traditional to … consummate the marriage?
Now why, exactly, had his brain gone there? It was an odd place to go, no doubt about it. Thinking about having sex on a wedding night was not going to lead him anyplace good in this case.
Finally, the ordeal was over, and Lance even managed to smile and wrap his arm around Jason’s shoulders as they left the barn. He had been doubtful about getting involved in this, but now that he was, there was no way he was going to give anyone the slightest reason to doubt their marriage.
When he did something, he did it all the way. Nothing held back. So if Jason needed him to go to Hollywood and be his husband there, well, he supposed that he had to go.
Though he wasn’t sure what he would do without Jason’s mother to watch his injured horse. The horse, really, was the reason he’d gotten into this in the first place.
Still, it would have been nice to know that he was going to have to traipse around in Hollywood. He had never even been there. He would be a fish out of water, and he’d honestly never been interested in going at all.
So he was quiet, thinking this all over. For himself, there wasn’t any amount of money that could make him do this, but for his ranch, that was a different story.
Maybe there was another reason. A deep down, secret reason, one that had only really fully come to him when he’d leaned in to kiss Jason. One that he wasn’t ready to admit, even to himself, was a factor.
It was the same reason he’d kissed Jason. He’d wanted to. Plain and simple. Only it really wasn’t that simple, when he remembered that he was supposed to be one hundred percent heterosexual.
“So I guess we have to leave in the morning,” Lance said quietly. No point in fighting the inevitable. “How long do you think I’ll have to stay there?” He’d need to pack. He snorted softly to himself. His life was falling apart, and he was thinking about packing.
“Just a couple of days. I might need you to come up again, though,” Jason warned, and Lance sighed, but he nodded. The sooner he got Jason elected, the sooner Lance could go back to living his normal life.
“As long as someone’s watching the ranch,” Lance said, aware that he sounded grumpy. Well, he was grumpy. Anyone would be.
“It’s late,” Jason said. “I’m tired. I’m going to bed.”
Lance bit at his lower lip as those words once more brought up images of what married couples tended to do on their wedding night. Not that he even had much of an idea how that worked between two men. Lance bet Jason would know.
Not that Lance was going to ask him.
